“Golden self portrait”

This project actually started back in 2012 when I was working as a 3D artist in a big production studio here in Stockholm.

We had a company visiting us to demo a range of their different 3d scanners, to show us the technique and how we could use them in production. I didn’t have any experience from 3D scanners at the time, so I was very excited to see how good (or bad) they were. I don’t remember any model names or brands, but I remember I was really impressed by the hand scanner that was used as a base mesh for the below self portrait of me.

The above golden self portrait, is my “refined 2020 version” of the below scans from 2012. I had to bring the model into ZBrush to add the missing details and recreate (sculpt) the hair and back of my head, that were missing from the original scan.

The raw 3D scan.

This 3d scan was actually only for quick demo purposes, so we didn’t care anything about lighting or the busy environment in the photo studio, where we were testing these scanners. The raw 3D data, showed in the turntable below, is the mesh that I received straight out of the 3D scanner. My hair, the back of my head and some other details were pretty messy, so I had to bring this model into ZBrush to try and “repair” these areas.
